Marble Cup Set in a Gilt Bronze Mount, 19th Century
The homage is understated yet obvious: this hard stone cup set in its gilt bronze mount is inspired by the Louis XIV style. As historicism took over national taste in the second half of the 19th century, the great artistic moments of the Ancien Régime were revived in original creations, which carefully avoided being exact copies of their predecessors. Here, the breccia marble is lightly molded as a baluster, while the mount and its mascarons hold the stone cup without weighing it down. The base borrows from the 19th century and prefers a more bourgeois, but no less elegant, sobriety to the opulence of the Louis XIV style. The piece is in very good condition.
