Psyche Mirror from the Empire Period, Early 19th Century
Seated on the marble base of the mirror as if on the steps of a temple, a young woman dressed in the antique style – whose physiognomy suggests that of Madame Récamier – is reflected in a bevelled glass mirror. Beside her, an incense burner, an ewer and a small chest of silks, all in gilded bronze, suggests that we are in the intimacy of the young woman. No doubt she has just prepared herself, using the ewer to wash, silks to adorn and fumigations to perfume herself. The mirror faithfully reflects the scene while two doves crown its gilded bronze frame. In the gilded bronze uprights, in the shape of exotic trees, are fixed the elements allowing to tilt the mirror surface as desired.
