Carved Wooden Snuff Box, 19th Century
On the lid, it is a nicely carved gallant scene which occupies almost the entire surface of the object. On the reverse, an American Indian seems to be playing a musical instrument, a kind of harp whose sound intrigues the dog sitting near the musician. This little box that looks like a snuffbox is a lovely masterpiece of folk art. Does it come from Europe or America? It is very difficult to say because many European sailors made these small snuffboxes on the way back to the Old Continent. Corozo nut, which is very easy to carve, is also easily dyed and patinated, so that it was a material of choice for making small objects. Anyway, this box entirely sculpted in medium relief is in very good condition.
