Scepter in Rock Crystal, Silver and Gilded Metal, 20th Century
This small scepter is a rare object of curiosity from Tibet. The vajra – the element forming the end surmounting the silver sheath – meaning “diamond” and “lightning”, is an important symbol and a ritual instrument in Hinduism and especially in the Vajrayāna Buddhist tradition (“way of the diamond” ) to which he gave his name, as well as in the bön (three distinct Tibetan religious traditions).
The Makara, the dragon-headed creature, is an aquatic animal from the mythological bestiary of India. He has an elephant’s trunk, crocodile teeth and a fish’s tail. This creature is associated with fertility and is found in different forms in India and Southeast Asia. This item has been lightly restored but is in very good condition.
