Small Box in Ivory, Gold and Hair, 18th Century
The almond shape is not common and the quality of the whole, although only in good condition, is remarkable. All in ivory and gold, this box presents a singularity whose importance is now forgotten: these two surfaces which seem to be guilloché are in reality lined with hair. It was in the 18th and 19th centuries in particular a common practice which nevertheless testified to an intimate and sincere link between the one who offered a lock of his hair and the person who received it. Did not Marie-Antoinette distribute it to her closest friends? Haven’t we piously preserved those of the Dauphin, the King and the young Madame Royale?
The already well-established tradition does not just offer a few locks of hair; one weaves them, one arranges them artistically as one did on this tiny box. Undoubtedly, the hair is that of the lady whose portrait is a medallion. Did she offer this little box to someone close to her, to her fiancé or husband or perhaps a suitor or relative requested it? We don’t know, but the testimony remains as imperishable as it is moving.
