Red Marble Cup, Gilt Bronze Mount, 19th Century
This soberly cut and molded crimson marble bowl is set in a chased, gilded bronze frame, with all the codes of the Renaissance style: lion heads and claws, sober scrolls and the allegory of Victory are all references to antiquity, while the plant motifs and florets seem closer to a Renaissance ornamental vocabulary. Clearly, this mounted bowl is in keeping with the historicist style of the second half of the 19th century. Cup and mount are in perfect condition, and the set will elegantly adorn a piece of furniture or a mantel shelf.
