Pair of Candlesticks with Griffins, Signed Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810 – 1892)
A lion’s body, wings and an eagle’s head, no doubt, these two creatures are indeed griffins! And if they had gradually disappeared with the end of the Middle Ages, they are back in the spotlight in this second half of the 19th century which is infatuated with heritage. The medieval period and its Romanesque and Gothic monsters, its shimmering techniques like here that of cloisonné enamels, nothing is too beautiful to recreate at home a neo-Gothic or neo-Romanesque universe, whose motifs are learnedly dictated by Viollet- le-Duc or Paul Abadie fils. Naturally, fashion does not escape Barbedienne, which offers its own models, slightly revisited to please the eye of the 19th century connoisseur.
Our two candlesticks in gilded bronze and cloisonné enamels are in perfect condition and signed on their base.
