Oil on Panel Signed Jacques Cancaret (1876-1941)
True to his preferred subjects, the painter Jacques Cancaret presents here a female nude portrait in the delicate pastel tones he so favored. A student of William Bouguereau, Gabriel Ferrier, and Jean Laronze, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and received a 3rd-class medal in 1904 and a 2nd-class medal in 1906.
With her short, modern hairstyle, the model is undoubtedly a fashionable young woman of her time, during the Roaring Twenties. This piece is in perfect condition.
Note the sketch of women dancing in a circle, drawn in graphite on the reverse. In 1929, he exhibited a painting entitled “Dancer.” This may be a study for that work or another, also on this theme. Indeed, the Roaring Twenties fashion of the painted model coincides with the period in which his Dancer was exhibited.
