Oil on Embossed Sheet Metal, J. Georges, 1903
While the first name behind this signature remains a mystery, the signature is familiar to poster collectors. J. Georges indeed affixed his distinctive mark to a number of advertising posters from Charente, Charente-Maritime, and Gironde between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Undoubtedly, he carefully produced paintings, supported by those dedicated to advertising city exhibitions—such as in Rochefort—or companies—such as the one for André Delmouly Aîné pianos in Bordeaux. An artist of his time, he seems sensitive to the English Aesthetic movement and Art Nouveau, as illustrated by this painting, in perfect condition, painted on sheet metal.
It depicts the goddess Flora, dressed in antique style, standing out against a forest backdrop lit by a sunset. The classic style and palette are reminiscent of the works of Sir Frederic Leighton.
