English Marine, 19th Century
Our painter was able to render with a very nice touch the manoeuvre of this English ship going upwind. In front of a superb sky, as the English artists paint it so well, our ship flying the British flag (whose Red Ensign is in its design after 1801) could just as well be a merchant ship as one from a British overseas territory. Beside it, a rowboat is tossed by the swell, while in the distance, we can observe a boat with a French flag. This oil on canvas, in its original gilded wooden frame, is in perfect condition.
