It’s impossible to say whether this fairground, captured in a moment of liveliness, takes place a few days before Midsummer’s Eve (a child in a straw hat in the foreground seems to suggest this), or later in the year (these few figures are wearing pieces of fabric around their necks—is it a scarf or a shawl?). However, the lively atmosphere of this event is palpable, and this small, anonymous painting, in very good condition, captures it with great freshness.
