Malachite Trinket Bowl. Russia, late 19th century
Very fashionable in the second half of the 19th century, malachite adorns all kinds of furniture and objects. This very soft rock which is not easily sculpted needs to be worked in marquetry. The Russian lapidaries developed a marquetry inspired by the pietre dure capable of covering flat surfaces as well as surfaces in relief, but very far from the Italian aesthetic. The Russian marquetry endeavors here to reproduce the natural pattern of the stone by fitting thin strips next to each other. The radial pattern of our trinket bowl is recognizable by its beautiful ocelli. Good condition.
