Georges Jessen (1893-1963), Bouquet of Lilies, Oil on Canvas, Undated

This minor Belgian master had a distinguished career, and his works are still appreciated today. Trained at the Academies of Mons (1915-1916) and Brussels, he worked in the studios of Jean Delville and Constant Montald. Once established as a painter, he became a professor at the Saint-Gilles Academy in 1925, eventually serving as its director between 1950 and 1960.

His gentle and intimate style flourished in landscapes, portraits, nudes, and flowers, which were his preferred subjects. Here, a bouquet of lilies in a blue vase takes center stage, while beside it, a small bouquet of yellow flowers—perhaps chrysanthemums—is displayed in a neo-Gothic vase, in the same style as the small crown-shaped bottle in the foreground on the left. The painting, in very good condition, is signed G. Jessen in the lower right corner.
