Carved Wooden Head, Cambodia, 19th Century
This carved head, bearing the traditional image of Siddhārtha Gautama, whose classical iconography depicts the archetype of the “pure and perfect Buddha,” exhibits the classic serene and peaceful expression. This prince, who renounced worldly riches to attain wisdom and then Enlightenment, has stretched earlobes, a reminder of the heavy gold earrings he wore before adopting an ascetic life. Some traces of polychromy and mounting marks on the head and under the base indicate that this piece was integrated into an architectural structure, whether religious or secular. This Cambodian piece of carved wood is in very good condition.
