Bronze statuette, “Dancer with a Hoop,” signed by Louis Sosson (active between 1905 and 1930)
The name of the Romanian sculptor Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (1886–1947) may not be the most widely recognized, yet he served as a direct inspiration for our sculptor, Louis Sosson, through a subject that became highly popular: the “hoop dancer.”
Living in Paris at the time, Chiparus drew inspiration from the capital’s myriad performances—a blend of exoticism, eroticism, and elegance. From cabaret dancers and the Ballets Russes to acts inspired by Oriental or Indian dance, there was no shortage of models; these influences led the Romanian artist to create the figure of the “hoop dancer”—a woman with a supple, scantily clad body, posed with a hoop. The work was an immediate success, perfectly capturing the essence of the Art Deco aesthetic: serpentine lines, fine materials, a fusion of the exotic and the classical—all brought together in a single piece. Our bronze statuette stands as a worthy successor to this quintessential 1920s style. Louis Sosson, an expert in chryselephantine sculpture, here explores the medium of bronze. His hoop dancer—adorned only with a diadem and a bracelet—rises gracefully from a marble base. She is captured in an elegant, poised movement, ready to spring forward, as suggested by the tension of a graceful *contrapposto*. This small, quintessentially Art Deco bronze is in excellent condition; it deserves a prominent place and serves as a fitting tribute to Louis Sosson—a talented, yet largely overlooked, artist.
