Bronze Mercury Thermometer. Restoration, 19th Century

This sardonic Faun was probably amused for a long time to see the temperature rise. The missing mercury on the thermometer obviously did not sadden him: whether it is hot or cold, the Fauns always find the object of new amusement! Especially since this character of their personality is beautifully rendered here. The modeling of the face, the mouths of the hair and the beard are only further enhanced by this crown of very finely chiseled vines. The bust rests on the graduated body of the gilt bronze thermometer, crowned with a drapery. The set is remarkably executed and in very good condition.
