Art Deco Bedside Table with Portor Marble Top, 1930s

This former hair salon fixture has found a new calling alongside a different kind of “head”—a headboard! An adorable little bedside table, this charming Art Deco accent piece is topped with Portor marble and features a drawer and a small cupboard.

Adorned with a radiating pattern reminiscent of Sonia Delaunay’s designs—highly popular during that era—the piece rests on four small metal ball feet.

Inside the door, a label bears the manufacturer’s name: Parfumeries Berdoues. The company was founded in the early 20th century by Pierre and Guillaume Berdoues, hairdressers in Toulouse who were perfectly positioned to create furniture specifically tailored to their profession.

In 1914, they set up shop at 9 Rue Rivals (where this piece was manufactured), and in 1936, Berdoues created a violet eau de toilette that became a resounding success! The path from hairdressing to perfumery was a natural progression. Designed and crafted within this refined world, it is no surprise that this piece—now in excellent condition—possesses such delightful character.
