Pair of Potpourris with the Muses, Wedgwood, Regency (1811 – 1820)
In this iconic cobalt blue from Wedgwood, these two imposing potpourris are closed with an openwork lid. Using the jasperware technique that made it so successful, the house represents the nine ancient muses. Thus, one easily recognize Melpomène representing tragedy, Clio History, Terpsichore dances while Erato is in the Lyric Choir, Polymnia devotes herself to Poetry, Euterpe to Music, Calliope to Epic and Thalie to Comedy, finally Urania watches over Astronomy. The whole, marked Wedgwood under the base, is in perfect condition.
