The Snake Charmer, Bronze Signed Charles Bourgeois, After 1863
This bronze signed “Atur Bourgeois” on the terrace bears underneath the label of the Oudin house, bronziers d’Art in Marseille. The man dressed in oriental style – in an outfit that is arguably more fantasized than authentic – seems confident about the charm he can produce on this belligerent python. Arguably, the sound of his murli – the clarinet – has little effect since snakes are notoriously deaf. Yet, the vibration of sound is known to captivate reptiles until it appeases them. Nevertheless, a “foil” is not useless in case the animal does not prove to be as music-loving as one might wish. This bronze with brown patina is in perfect condition.
