The Meharist. Vienna Bronze, Early 20th Century
The meharist is the one who rides a mehari, in other words a dromedary (mahari in Arabic). This dromedary, higher than that of packsaddle, is ridden by the Tuaregs, the Chaâmbas (tribe from Arabia) and the meharists of the French army. Here, our patinated and gilded bronze presents one of these Chaâmbas, holding a parasol on a richly adorned dromedary. This type of Orientalist subject is characteristic of the production of Vienna bronzes at the turn of the 20th century. Our bronze is in perfect condition.
