Small Ivory and Silver Box, 18th Century
This little box responds to all the codes of its time: the refinement and softness of the ivory, the luxury of the string of silver beads and the neoclassical elegance of a Wedgwood-style biscuit. Is the subject inspired by an ancient Greek or Roman bas-relief? Perhaps, but it is difficult to identify the myth it illustrates. A bull sacrifice, a man imploring at the feet of a queen or a goddess – perhaps Hera if we stick to the last scene where we recognize a young girl in wedding dress.
The interior lined with red velvet brings even more distinction to this object which perhaps contained a fine jewel. It is in very good condition.
