Sèvres Porcelain Planter, Empire Period
On immaculate white hard-paste porcelain, the golden decoration uses an ancient vocabulary explicitly referring to Dionysus, a god anchored in nature and conducive to its profusion; a vocabulary that could not be more suited to a plant pot. A frieze of interlacing and flowers on the lip precedes Dionysian thyrsos on which ivy is wrapped and from which laurel garlands are suspended. Between each thyrsus, a horn and a spear, torches, cymbals, an aulos (a flute with two mouthpieces) and a harp are all attributes of Dionysus and his Bacchantes. This planter is in perfect condition.
