Portrait of a Young Woman. Vietnam, 19th Century
This oil on canvas exudes a pleasant feeling of tranquility. The young woman portrayed here is immersed in her reading. It seems that she has been reading for some time already since she took care to place a shawl on her shoulders, in case perhaps she would be chilly. Under her shawl, we guess an Ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) from the end of the 19th century. Her hair, slightly up in a bun at the nape of the neck, also testifies to Vietnamese women’s fashion at the turn of the 20th century.
Behind her, a pattern on the wall evokes an oriental tapestry or perhaps a Vietnamese lacquer panel. We do not know what absorbs our reader so much, but the painter has managed to convey the calm and restful concentration that accompanies fascinating readings. The painting is in very good condition and presented in its original frame.
