Portrait of an elegant woman, signed Cesare Ciani (1854 – 1925) and dated 1903
The painter’s touch is imbued with impressionism, that of the model, with the Belle Époque. However, we are not in France but in Italy. The painter, Cesare Ciani, turned to painting quite late in life. In 1878, he was 24 years old and eventually entered the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied painting with Giuseppe Ciaranfi and Giovanni Fattori. The latter influenced him in the choice of his subjects, mainly portraits and landscapes.
Highly appreciated during his lifetime, he participated in numerous exhibitions in France and Italy so that he made a living from his art.
This very beautiful portrait of an elegant Italian woman, signed and dated lower right, is emblematic of the work of Cesare Ciani.
