Picking Tomatoes in Provence. Oil on Canvas Signed Joseph Meissonnier (1864 – 1943)
In his characteristic impressionist touch, Meissonnier makes us hear the sound of cicadas, makes us feel the sun of a summer morning and the rustling of the clothes of this picker against the leaves of the tomato plants, the slight creaking of the wicker and a similar noise a few steps away.
Joseph Meissonnier is not at his first attempt with this very beautiful genre scene. His touch is already asserted and his art is mature. Born in Montfavet, a commune of Avignon on May 4th, 1864, he became a pupil of Pierre Grivolas, Eugène Dufour and Paul Saïn before joining the “Groupe des Treize” created in 1912 by Clément Brun. There he became friends with Joseph Hurard.
