Trompe-l’oeil Encense Burner in Gilded Bronze, 19th Century

Reminiscent of the monumental torchère and Hygie’s cup, this perfume burner borrows codes from neoclassicism and the Renaissance (witness the mascarons and lion’s claws) to produce a fine, elegant object, beautifully gilded and characteristic of 19th-century historicism. In perfect condition, this highly decorative object may owe its origin to a foreign silversmith.
