Patinated Terracotta Sculpture of the Curé of Ars, 20th Century

Jean-Marie Vianney, known as the Curé of Ars (May 8, 1786 – August 4, 1859), is a famous Catholic priest canonized by the Church in 1925 and the object of popular devotion. He was the parish priest of Ars for 41 years and was granted the title, by Pius XI in 1929, of “patron saint of all parish priests in the world.”
His eventful life is, according to some, accompanied by supernatural (miracles) and preternatural (demonic infestations) events. However, there is no doubt that he possessed a remarkable business acumen to finance his charitable works.

This patinated terracotta sculpture, in very good condition, differs from those that usually depict the parish priest. His face and posture depict him in a natural and benevolent attitude rather than deep in fervent prayer.
