Pair of very large decorative bone vases. China, 19th Century
These two very large decorative vases are entirely veneered with bone on a wooden core. Some bone plates are carved in medium relief and enhanced with colors. The polychromy nuanced by the pallor of the bone accentuates the relief and enlivens the scenes that adorn the belly of these vases. On each of the vases, scenes of children playing under stone pines offer all kinds of activities: some play music, others carry lanterns, ride wooden horses, practice martial arts while one of the toddlers risks igniting what looks like a fireworks rocket! No doubt this one will startle his lazy comrades lying in the grass. These two very large bone vases will require proper and careful transportation, which is why we will provide the buyer with a personalized quote. The whole is in very good condition, with some missing bone plates.
