Pair of Oxblood Red Lamps, 19th Century
The Louis XV style did not only mark French classical art for its rococo taste. Exchanges with China, in which Louis XIV was already interested in the previous century, intensified in the 18th century thanks to intense trade supported by the French East India Company. The latter thus sends Chinese works of art to the French market (and vice versa!) in large quantities.
From these fruitful exchanges, hybrid decorative art objects are born, borrowing from the arts of China and Baroque taste. Our oxblood red ceramic and gilded bronze lamps are an elegant evocation of this style which came back into fashion in the last quarter of the 19th century. The whole is in very good condition.
