Pair of Nautiluses Mounted on Bronze, 19th Century
Emblematic objects of Renaissance cabinets of curiosities, nautiluses enhanced by gilded bronze mounts and semi-precious stones have never ceased to fascinate. In the 19th century, the enthusiasm did not wane, especially as colonial expeditions brought back many exotic and little-known marvels. The bourgeoisie was particularly enthusiastic about coral and mother-of-pearl.
These two nautiluses have thus been raised on gilt bronze bases adorned with carnelian. In a Rocaille style faithful to that of the 18th century, two mascarons – whose modeling can be admired – support the shell. Scrolls of acanthus leaves forming the four feet echo the spiral movement of the nautiluses. The set is in excellent condition.
