Original Engraving of an Architectural Project for Bordeaux, Late 18th Century
Rare are the works of ancient art that offer, like this engraving, a dystopia of what Bordeaux could have been if this project had been followed. We do not know of course at what precise place on the docks of the Gironde it would have taken place. Nevertheless, one naturally thinks of the Place de la Bourse, whose current appearance is due to the famous architects Gabriel, father (Jacques) and son (Ange-Jacques) who worked there between 1730 and 1752.
Perhaps our chisel print bears witness to the other projects proposed at the time to redesign this essential place in Bordeaux?
In this case, it would only be the memory or the resumption of one of these projects since the engraver François-Denis Née (1732 – 1817) was only 2 years old when the work began and had not yet been born when the projects were offered.
Our proof, interesting in many respects, is in good general condition. Note the stains on the leaf but a neat blackened wooden frame that gives it all its character.
