Okimono in ivory. Japan, Late 19th Century
A motif appreciated in Japan at the turn of the 20th century, the character represented is in the process of operating a water wheel using the strength of his legs. Either the flow of the river is insufficient, or the energy released is not enough, this man climbs one after the other the vanes or blades to maintain the rhythm of the wheel. It seems that a Japanese sculptor brought this subject into fashion at the very end of the 19th century and that this subject was then copied by others. Our ivory okimono is in perfect condition.
