Engraving of the Memphis Pyramids from Description de l’Egypte, 1809 – 1822.
This proof is taken from Description de l’Egypte, or Compendium of observations and research that were made in Egypt during the expedition of the French army published by order of the government. Paris, Imperial Printing, Royal Printing, 1809-1822.
It was the largest and most important editorial enterprise dedicated to the study of a civilization. During his expedition to Egypt in 1798, Bonaparte surrounded himself with scholars, botanists, artists, naturalists and geographers whom he commissioned to list the monuments, costumes, animals, flora, minerals, objects of Ancient and Modern Egypt. This monumental project will continue even after the fall of Napoleon and will take more than 10 years to complete.
These Pyramids of Memphis, General view of the pyramids, taken from the South-East is a rare testimony to this collection which almost never arrives whole and complete because, generally, the sheets have been scattered. Ours is presented framed, with some inevitable « freckles », but in very good general condition.
