Earthenware Rooster Signed Louis Carrier-Belleuse (1848 – 1913) for the Choisy-le-Roi Manufacture
Ah, what a beautiful rooster! The high crest and the glorious plumage, this gallinaceous looks great and does not fail to let it be known! If it weren’t made of earthenware, we would hear it loud and clear.
An essential piece of Louis Carrier-Belleuse’s production, the rooster hides a vase in the small low wall that it runs along. This model is one of the variants created especially by the artist for the Manufacture de Choisy-le-Roi, of which he became artistic director in 1889.
It must be said that the artist lacks neither talent nor references. His father is none other than Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, a famous sculptor much appreciated by Napoleon III. In addition to being his father’s son, he was also his pupil but also took lessons from Gustave Boulanger and Alexandre Cabanel.
This polychrome earthenware in perfect condition forms a vase whose base is signed in the paste and bears the mark of the factory on the reverse.
