Deer Listening n°1. Bronze signed Isodore Bonheur (1827 – 1901)
No doubt Isodore’s big sister, Rosa Bonheur (1822 – 1899) was no stranger to her little brother’s taste for the representation of animals. But since it was necessary to distinguish himself from his brotherhood and his painter father, Isodore turned to sculpture. He then left for Paris and entered the Beaux Arts in 1849. Already the following year, he stood out at the Salon: all the visitors agreed in recognizing that his Bullfight was strikingly realistic and lively. His career launched, he remained faithful to animal sculpture and was received numerous awards and medals for his work, including the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, the very one that saw the inauguration of the Eiffel tower. In 1895 he received the Legion of Honor.
In the 20th century, his work remained so much appreciated that the Comptoir français d’art – thus named from 1927 to 1936, before becoming the Comptoir général des fontes around 1995 – published some rare and beautiful bronzes by Isodore Bonheur, such as this Deer on the Lookout that we present here.
