Competition Horse. Bronze by Isodore Bonheur (1827 – 1901)

Born in Bordeaux, Isodore is the son of a painter renowned for his landscapes and his portraits, but above all he is the younger brother of the famous Rosa Bonheur (1822 – 1899), emeritus animal painter and recognized during her lifetime when her feminine condition did not, at first, favor such success. Isidore probably inherited the family taste for animal representation but he preferred to practice it in sculpture rather than in painting. Entered in the Beaux Arts in Paris in 1849, he presented at the Salon in 1850 his group Combat de taureaux which met with some success. Throughout his career, he will receive a number of awards for his work, including a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, the very one that saw the inauguration of the Eiffel Tower, then the Legion of honor in 1895.

Horses and equestrian subjects figure prominently in Isodore Bonheur’s work and are highly regarded for their careful realism and manageable size. The one we present is in perfect condition.
