Chinese Screen, first quarter of the 20th century
An essential piece of furniture in Chinese interiors, the folding screen regularly features floral or animal motifs in reference to Asian mythology, Chinese legends or with an auspicious purpose.
Here, the mother-of-pearl marquetry shows an eagle attacking two small birds. The eagle yīng often symbolizes in China the heroism of a great man and, always, pride, strength and bravery. Traditionally, the pine tree, which represents longevity and vigour, accompanies the eagle, as is the case on our screen.
The peonies adorning the frame and the phoenix crowning the central panel are auspicious motifs highly prized in Chinese culture. The peony, queen of flowers, is a symbol of prosperity and happiness while the phoenix naturally symbolizes immortality.
An elegant, unique folding screen with a suspicious design that is perfectly suited to ensure the durability of a home!
