Bird in Solid Silver and Agate on a Rock Crystal Base, 19th Century

Inspired by the Renaissance mounted stones, this solid silver bird plays on the taste for the bizarre and the curiosity of natural forms. The choice of species is already exotic: parrot or parakeet, we don’t know, and for good reason! Everything lies in the powerful evocation of a distant imagination, an imagination renewed in the second half of the 19th century in Europe. The goldsmith thus used solid silver to shape part of the bird, while the lapidary made an agate the belly of the animal and a block of rock crystal, deliberately poorly squared, a “natural” rock support for the bird. The whole in very good condition is a beautiful decorative sculpture.
