Ammonite Fossils, Paleozoic or Mesozoic Eras

Appearing during the Paleozoic, during the Devonian period, ammonites (or Ammonoidea) are a subclass of fossil cephalopod mollusks. This species disappeared during the great expansion of the Cretaceous-Paleogene, 66 million years ago. These cephalopods would thus inhabit the oceans for nearly 335 million years! There are many species of ammonites and their study has made it possible to make reliable chronological markers. Since their shell is reminiscent of the shape of ram’s horns, the ancient Greeks named them thus, as reported in the Dictionnaire de Trévoux (printed in Nancy in 1740 by Pierre Antoine): “Ammon’s horn. A type of rolled stone, knotty, ash-colored, and curved in the shape of a ram’s horn, such as those that antiquity gave to Jupiter Ammon. ” Our fossils of good size and in excellent condition.
