Bronze Sculpture Depicting Two Putti, Circa 1880

A quintessential example of the French school from the last quarter of the 19th century, this small bronze group portrays two charming putti, dressed in the fashion of the *Ancien Régime*, enjoying a late-summer rest. A basket filled with grapes to the left of the young girl, and a grapevine still laden with clusters to the right of the young boy, anchor the scene in a temporal setting reminiscent of 18th-century pastoral themes. The girl is about to pour some of the contents of a jug into the cupped hand of her companion. Is it water, or is it wine? The story does not say—but the piece itself speaks to a nostalgic longing for an idealized 18th century, felt during the often-turbulent final years of the 19th century.

This small bronze, featuring a brown patina and no visible signature, rests on a white marble base and is in perfect condition.
