An early admirer of the Italian Renaissance, Franz Priking (1929-1979) studied philosophy and explored nature through lyrical abstraction. Studying at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1948, he drew on German Expressionism to develop a taste for color.
From 1950 onwards, he lived in France and drew closer to Cubism, from which he borrowed the black rings that characterize his work. The use of geometric shapes to formalize space is also recurrent in his work.
