It is considered by many Chinese to be of great literary quality as well as one of the best poems by Mao who wrote several.
\nHere is its translation:<\/p>\n

Alone I stand in the autumn cold
\nOn the tip of Orange Island,
\nThe Hsiang flowing northward;
\nI see a thousand hills crimsoned through
\nBy their serried woods deep-dyed,<\/p>\n

And a hundred barges vying
\nOver crystal blue waters.
\nEagles cleave the air,
\nFish glide in the limpid deep;
\nUnder freezing skies a million creatures contend in freedom.<\/p>\n

Brooding over this immensity,
\nI ask, on this boundless land
\nWho rules over man’s destiny?<\/p>\n

I was here with a throng of companions,
\nVivid yet those crowded months and years.<\/p>\n

Young we were, schoolmates,
\nAt life’s full flowering;
\nFilled with student enthusiasm
\nBoldly we cast all restraints aside.<\/p>\n

Pointing to our mountains and rivers,
\nSetting people afire with our words,
\nWe counted the mighty no more than muck.<\/p>\n

Remember still
\nHow, venturing midstream, we struck the waters
\nAnd waves stayed the speeding boats?<\/p>\n

This framed calligraphy of Mao’s poem is in very good condition.<\/p>\n
