Exotic fruits (pineapple, melon, orange, apricot, watermelon and pomegranate) are, as often, associated with original sin and paradoxically with chastity and fertility. So many reasons related to the pious and faithful wife.
\nAs for the symbolism of game, it is often ambiguous. Killed by bigger and stronger than themselves, these birds are the victims of pride and selfishness, sacrificed to satisfy vanity. The parables of the hunter (that of Saint-Hubert is the most famous) are not lacking in the Texts to signify that the activities of pleasure distance man from spiritual research. But game also symbolizes abundance and wealth, something a new home aspires to.
\nFinally, look at the half-empty wine glass, bottom right. Here again, the symbol is double: it is both the blood of Christ and the memory of his sacrifice which invites to temperance. It can also be the metaphor of life; as we have to drink from this glass, the time elapses and the wine diminishes.
\nIn the 17th and 18th centuries, still lifes or vanitas were both decorative and moral works and this is what earned them their success. Silent paintings of contemplation, they must lead the spectator to remember the ephemeral of life and to engage in a social and moral path alone capable of offering them eternal life at the Last Judgment. These are widely acclaimed gifts to celebrate new unions.
