An excellent ceramist, Paul Utzschneider developed techniques and won numerous gold medals at various national exhibitions.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Crowning his efforts and diligent research, Napoleon I ordered a set of twelve vases from him.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"column\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In 1836, Paul gave way to his son-in-law Alexandre de Geiger who in 1838 approached Villeroy and Boch;<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">thus the two companies do not compete but share the areas where their skills apply.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This favorable economic situation enabled the Sarreguemines factory to benefit from substantial investments, soon transforming it into one of the largest earthenware factories in Europe, which is still active today.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"column\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Like every factory worthy of the name, that of Sarreguemines sets up a system of earthenware marks to identify the piece, also to authenticate it and above all to know, if not its technical characteristics, at least the year of its manufacture<\/span><\/span><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Thus, marks present on these vases allow us to learn more about them.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image media=&#8221;101566&#8243; corresponds to the number of the form.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Here, the Duplessis model.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The number \u201c227\u201d corresponds to the dough number.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The numbers \u201c11\u201d and \u201c04\u201d correspond respectively to the month and year of creation, i.e. November 1904.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">As for the letters &#8220;KK&#8221;, they refer to the shaper of the piece.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This pair of vases and their pedestals were therefore made of Sarreguemines earthenware in November 1904, conforming to the design of the Duplessis model.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">A name which, of course, was not chosen at random.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;234369&#8243;]<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Jean-Claude Duplessis (1699 &#8211; 1774): The Ornamentalist of Louis XV&#8217;s Reign<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;175478&#8243;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 4\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<p class=\"column\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Born in Turin in 1699, he was then called Giovanni Claudio Ciamberlano, known as Duplessi.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">He probably trained as a goldsmith in Italy and entered the service of the Prince of Carignan &#8211; of whom he became the protected goldsmith -, the Duke of Savoy and the King of Sardinia.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Appointed Lieutenant General of the King&#8217;s Armies, the Prince of Carignan went to Paris between 1734 and 1737 with Jean-Claude Duplessis following him.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Shortly after, the prince died and Duplessis obtained the protection of Count Marc-Pierre de Voyer de Paulmy d&#8217;Argenson (1696 \u2013 1764) and was installed by him in the Louvre.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"column\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">From 1748, Duplessis actively collaborated in the development of the Vincennes factory.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Prolific creator and inventor of a turning machine to help his profession, his order book is always full and it is as much merchant-mercers as aristocrats who call on his talents for the design of ornaments.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"column\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In 1758, he became goldsmith to King Louis XV although he had never obtained the French mastery certification normally required to practice his trade according to the rules of the corporations.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">He was entrusted with many ornamental designs and still worked for Vincennes and added the S\u00e8vres factory to his prestigious clients.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Already a talented goldsmith, he was also a brilliant ornamentalist and sculptor.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">His constant experimentation made him a real \u201cdesigner\u201d who included very current concerns in the fundamentals of royal manufactures: functionality of the object, inclusion in the aesthetics of its time and adequacy of form and decoration.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image media=&#8221;101531&#8243; caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; media_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;104223&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;550570&#8243;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 4\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Our pair of vases is the result of this reflection mixed with a later creation which does not forget the teachings of the goldsmith of the reign of Louis XV.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This shape of vase takes its name from Duplessis because it was he who imagined the shape.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Now part of the decorative vocabulary, the Duplessis form yields to many variations although it retains the characteristic movement given by the famous ornamentalist.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Thus, the rococo style \u2013 which was the field of experimentation of this unique designer \u2013 is here reworked, as an evocation or even a tribute to the rococo style which had been forgotten for a while.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image media=&#8221;101533&#8243; caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; media_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;104952&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;122476&#8243;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 5\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The 19th and 20th centuries have in common to have experienced a wide variety of novelties in the field of decorative arts.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Fashions and curiosities have flourished there.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In the second half of the 19th century, while Japonism and then the vegetal forms of Art Nouveau sketched out a whole new modernity, a taste for traditional forms remained.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">At the beginning of the 1890s, the taste for asymmetry, curves and fantasy reappeared in two forms: that of Art Nouveau and that, nostalgic, of the rock forms of the previous century.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">With regard to this last aspect of the taste of our ancestors, the Sarreguemines factory bears masterly witness to this return to the classic forms of the decorative arts of the Ancien R\u00e9gime.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Certainly, this period is somewhat fantasized: one readily imagines it as an idyllic parenthesis like the paintings of Watteau and Boucher.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The productions of the rock taste are meant to be graceful and refined.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The catalog of the manufacture thus offers several objects of this style without however ever using the term \u201crocaille\u201d or \u201crococo\u201d, preferring names reminiscent of the former monarch.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Thus, we find forms \u201cLouis XV\u201d, \u201cPompadour\u201d, \u201cdu Barry\u201d and of course \u201cDuplessis\u201d.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This last form was created in 1878 and was presented by the manufacture at the Universal Exhibition of the same year in the ceramic section.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image media=&#8221;101521&#8243;
